Christmas updates, and finally a British Motor Show!

Hello folks! Hope you're all doing well and are ready for the incoming booze and calorie overdoses soon to overwhelm us over the festive period. As I've had some downtime recently, I've been able to finalise some updates to the site's car valuation algorithm that I've been wanting to get finished for a while. Things are now up and running well, so feel free to try it out at your will. What are these changes you ask? Sorry, that is proprietry information, but I can say that they include certain points and car/model features that the used car industry is looking at more and more in the current climate and generation of vehicles. In other words, small things can have a big effect!

Not gone and not forgotten!

Ok, so it has been about 5 and a half months since my last blog entry (or 173 days for the pedantic). There have been many changes in the Ormskirk household in the past few months, and these have meant that my ramblings have been (thankfully I'm sure to some people) scuppered. So just what has been going on to stop me posting? And more importantly (as this site is not really a personal blog of mine) what has been going on with this website? Read on, dear reader, if you dare! (or have far too much time on your hands)

My day out at the Geneva Motor Show

Last week I took a wee soiree to the land of cuckoo clocks and milky chocolate, Switzerland. Mainly for a little break, to try a bit of skiing (but more often the apres ski to be honest), but I'd also managed to wrangle a ticket for one day at the 84th annual Salon International de l'Auto, or for the language-deficient (and those who didn't even bother to read the title), the International Geneva Motor Show. Though I spent a great deal of the day with wide eyes and overactive saliva glands, I did manage to jot down some notes on what I was looking at and what I thought of it, utilising a handy Toblerone as a writing implement, and today I attempt to transform my chocolate-y scribblings into some sort of readable account. You may want to stop reading now.

Who bought my dream car on eBay?

Some of you might know, or have gathered from reading some of my previous blog entries, that I'm rather fond of my Audis. The lovely German engineering and 'Vorsprung durch Technik', along with the looks and contours of the chassis, as well as the drive quality, just manage to do it for me. My name is Bob, and I'm an Audi-holic. I'm also a fan of the eighties, having grown up in that decade, and the nostalgia for that time continues to tug at my feelings. So, when news came to me the other week that the Audi Quattro used in BBC's Ashes to Ashes was up for sale on eBay, you can guess that my saliva glands were in full production. So, this blog post is somewhat of a labour of love, and may be unreadable to some. Fire up the Quattro!

Chelsea tractors can't handle the rain

Or at least their drivers can't...

The more perceptive of you all may have noticed we've had a bit of rain lately in these fair Isles of ours. Or more accurately, many parts of the UK have had their wettest December and January in over a century. Whilst no actual storm has been particularly big or intense, it's been the regularity of them that has caused much of the flooding that we've been seeing broadcast on the news nationwide. Of course, with any extreme or disruptive weather, there are bound to be roads closed or otherwise rendered impassible, which means ruined travel plans and stranded drivers. This is nothing new, and the ever-present AA (Automobile Association) is always at hand to provide rescue. However, in a recent report released by the company, which details some 7,000 vehicles rescued from floods since the beginning of January, a 'disproportionate' number these have been Chelsea tractors (or SUVs to move from the vernacular). Is the lure of driving through that puddle too much for some?

Total Recalls

As with any mass-produced mechanical product, vehicle recalls are unfortunately sometimes a necessity in today's market. Whilst we now have computer modelling and safety calculating equations, defects and safety issues can still raise their ugly heads in even the most carefully crafted of cars. We tend to see recall notices tucked away in the back of newspapers, or sometimes featured on automotive websites as filler news. As such they tend to be ignored, unless your vehicle is one of the ones affected. Whilst a recall is generally a good thing, as it should serve to improve your vehicle's performance or remedy a slight hiccup, you may be surprised as to just how many vehicles are recalled every year. In statistics released by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), it appears that 2013 saw approaching 1 million vehicles being recalled from the UK's streets.

Motor City's 2014 Offerings

Every January since 1907, the City of Detroit plays host to the North American International Auto SHOW (NAIAS), one of the biggest automotive shows in the US. Hogging a huge 90,000+ square metres of exhibition space at the Cobo Centre, the NAIAS attracts a wide range of press, industry members and the general car-loving public. ('Wide range' wasn't meant to be a joke about the size of most Americans - ok it was...). Despite the beloved Motor City apparently slowly rotting away in recent years, it is still home to the headquarters of the US' top carmakers; General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. As such it is these manufacturers that traditionally take up the most floor space. But what new vehicles have been unveiled to the public, and what new details have been released about other forthcoming cars? In this post I attempt to wrap-up the Goldies, Oldies and Mouldies of the Detroit motor show.

Ford knows you shop at Lidl!

Last week saw the annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show), the famous technology and electronics showcase for major corporations, in Las Vegas, Nevada. A chance for companies to show off their forthcoming or prototyped technologies to industry professionals and other people in-the-know (but not the general public), many new widgets and gizmos are introduced here every year, including automotive technologies and gadgets. It also gives various members of companies an opportunity to speak about their products and participate in discussions with industry buyers and other business folk. This year however, it appears that one Ford exec let his mouth run wild, and said some stuff that he really shouldn't.

What does 2014 have for the UK car market?

First of all, I'd like to start my first blog post of 2014 with a very happy new year to all We Value It visitors and users. Lets hope this year continues to see good things for the automotive industry. The sales of new and used cars here in the UK are currently at their highest for some time, and if all continues going as it is at the moment, 2014 looks to be a good one. A slew of new and revised models are on the slate for being released this year, so if you're in the market for a new car, or want to sell your current vehicle to finance one, there will be numerous options available to you. As well as new car offerings, what else could we be looking forward to in the next twelve months?

The top 5 cheapest cars to own in the most expensive country to run a car

The UK recently came out on top in a survey looking at the costs of running a car in 21 different countries throughout the globe. At a calculated average of just under £3,500 a year to pay for insurance, fuel, taxes and MOTs, this puts motorists in the UK more than £1,000 more out of pocket than our American cousins, and £2,000 poorer than drivers in China. Indeed, many car buyers may only be interested in the price to buy a motor, without stopping and thinking about how much actually keeping it running and road legal will end up costing them. With this in mind, I have had an attempt at producing a top 5 list of the cheapest new cars to buy if low ownership costs are what you are looking for.
